Interview with...
DENICE DUFF

NOTfilms:First of all, I'd like to ask you Denice, you studied French in college, right?
DENICE:Oui.

NOTfilms:So, when did you decide--
DENICE:Actually I was studying Engineering and Graphic Design.

NOTfilms:So, at what point did you decide that you wanted to get into acting?
DENICE:Well, when I was sixteen living in Los Angeles, I'd gotten an agent and started to go out on auditions, but it was actually tough because my mother couldn't really drive me around, so I waited utnil I got my own car, and when I was eighteen I started back up again. It was one of those things if you live in Los Angeles, and you have any sort of out going personality and a fairly decent look, someone is going to say, Hey, let me do your pictures, or Hey, you should audition for me. So, in my case I knew a lot of photographers. And I wound up going to New York University, I left UCLA, and I just wanted an education that had a little bit more of a cultural basis in it. And I knew that regardless of what I did for a living, that going to NYU would give me a real basis in people and arts, so I doubled majored in Theater and Photography.

NOTfilms:Which leads me to my next question, which do you enjoy more: photography, or acting?
DENICE:I enjoy photography more because it's something I do five to six days a week now for the last two to three years, and, and I control every aspect of it unless it's a big shoot, then I hire out a make-up artist, but usually I do the styling, I do the hair and make-up. I just did Nancy Cartwright from The Simpsons, she does Bart Simpsons voice, and I get to direct them, I get to pull the fun emotion out of them. Most actors and musicians hate taking still pictures, and I've been a model before, so I have a lot of affinity for the camera. I mean, I take a far better picture than how I think I look because I really dig it. I mean you could retouch a wrinkle or a bad tooth, but you can't retouch a sparkle into someones eye. So my job is to make sure they're comfortable and to make sure they have that sparkle. And I just like to help people.

NOTfilms:How has it been for you juggling, not only being an actress and a photographer, but a mother as well?
DENICE:I don't juggle it very well.[she laughs] It's fucking nuts, really is what it is. I don't stop, I never eat a meal sitting down. I cry every now and then; every two weeks I break down in tears and wish I had a nine-to-five job where I could end my job, come home, and just be a mother. Or on the weekends, just shoot pictures for the fun of it, but photography is one of my incomes. And I have a large overhead living in L.A., and I've been lucky to have a decent career as an actress, but then I take time off to be a mom. It's crazy, but what keeps me going is that they all happen to be really wonderful things, and if they weren't such beautiful jobs, then I couldn't do it.

NOTfilms:You've been acting in a lot of different genres, including many familiar commercials, but how has it been working in horror for you?
DENICE:Well, I've done four of these horror flicks for Subspecies, and it's been great. I have nothing to complain about, I never get killed and I always get paid, and it's funny that I can do these movies and come here and sell pictures of myself with fangs in my mouth and my "ninees" hanging out, and still do commercials for Proctor and Gamble. [she laughs]

NOTfilms:So, what's next for you?
DENICE:I'm auditioning for pilots, and I'm doing Subspecies 5, I'm going back to Romania [where Full Moon's studios are], and it's going to be a prequel. So, any of you Subspecies fans out there, it's Radu's story of how he became a vampire. So, the first half of the movie he won't have make-up, and since my character Michelle wasn't alive back then, they've put me in as Helena who is Michelle's preincarnated self. And I have a lot to do with Radu and why he is what he becomes. They'll be horses and swordfights, and all sorts of stuff.

NOTfilms:We'll look forward to it.
DENICE:Me too. Thanks.
